The history of the National Museum of Indonesia

The National Museum of Jakarta Indonesia is the largest in Indonesia and it is also one of the oldest museums in Southeast Asia. On April 24, 1778, a group of Dutch scientists created the institute under the name of Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, (English Translate- Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences) to encourage research in the sciences and the arts field particularly in history, archaeology, ethnography, and physics, and publicizing the data by Minister of Education and Culture that was then under Dutch colonial rule.

The institution was renamed the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia. and the exhibition was turned over to the Indonesian government on September 17, 1962, and became known as Museum Pusat (Central Museum). Later, the Museum was renamed the Museum Nasional of Indonesia by the decision of the Minister of Education and Culture.
