The Wildlife of Kynance Cove Beach

The Kynance Cove Beach and Lizard peninsula are well-known for their flora and fauna. The molten rock that solidified to form the Lizard was nearly 10 kilkilometerslow below the planet’s surface and under enormous heat and pressure 375 million years ago. As one of the rocks (peridotite) rose above the Moho, the border between the Earth’s crust and mantle, its magnesium and iron content increased, and it underwent a metamorphic transformation into serpentinite. It broke through the crust in the Rheic Ocean, 30 degrees south of the equator, where it is now a portion of an ocean ridge.

Around 250 million years ago, the Rheic Ocean dried up and the rock massif traveled north, crossing the equator in the process. Less than a hundred million years ago, the rock mass that eventually became the Lizard peninsula crossed the Tropic of Cancer and continued northward, eventually reaching 50 degrees north at the beginning of the last glacial period.
